Breed All About It...
Most of us have heard (and may even know them by) their nicknames - hot dogs, weiner dogs, low riders, carpet sharks, land sharks - but many don't know about the breed beyond their initial appearance.
Dachshunds are a German breed, the product of human engineering for the purpose of hunting and going underground after game - most notably the fierce badger. The word Dachshund (pronounced daks-hoondt), literally atranslated from German, means badger dog. Although those of us in the United States may refer to the breed as Dachshunds, in Germany the breed is still referred to as Tekels or Dackels.
There is no denying that Dachshunds are irresistably cute, funny, and oh-so cuddly. Some of them are quite adept at being clowns, putting on performances that will have you rolling on the floor with laughter. Extremely smart, they are also excellent manipulators and life with them becomes something of a game of chess - you are forever matching wits with your clever canine to maintain the 'upper paw' in the situation. They are cute and they know it - they just have to flash their sad eyes at you to make you melt and then they will have you wrapped around their little paw. Dachshunds are very German - meaning they can be tenacious, willful, determined, and stubborn beyone all reasoning. They are generally fearless, stand their ground in situations where others would flee, and they love to rule the house. Therefore, we strongly recommend to all potential adopters that you have and develop a sizable stubborn streak of your own in order to avoid being a constant slave to your too-cute-for-words new addition.
It has been said that to a dog a human is just an elongated and unusually cunning dog. With most breeds this may not be a problem, but Dachshunds are just as likely to "flip you the paw" as they are to acquiesce to your command. Obedience classes are strongly recommended with lifetime follow through. If you don't establish the rules of the house, or fail to enforce them daily, the rule of law will default to those of the Dachshund. Dachshund rule # 1 - I can do whatever I want to do, and I can do it whenever I want to do it. Dachshund rule # 2 - If I like it, want it, touch it, lick it, chew it, shred it, smell it, or see it, IT'S MINE! Dachshund rule # 3 - The world - and MY human in particular, live to serve me.
Life with the breed isn't always hard - but it is work and the rewards are well worth the battles along the way. We recommend the book "Dachshunds for Dummies" for both novice and veteran Dachshund owners alike.
